Love and Grief Poem

Shock

Sorrow

Dismay

Anger

I know love and grief

Life was good

So confident

Had a smile for everyone

Positive

SUDDEN UNEXPECTED CHANGE

I see her pain

I know love and grief

She rushes into my home

Jaw is clenched

Clothing is wrinkled

Hand tightly grips her purse

Kleenex is in other hand

Hair is dishevelled

She curses loudly as she drops her keys

Her eyes are so sad

Mascara is on her cheek

Lip is trembling

I see her pain

The sighs

The grimacing

Her coffee cup drops to the floor

She curses and the tears arrive

Uncontrollable sobbing

I see her pain

I cannot take her pain away

I know love and grief

We sit in silence

The crying ceases

Sighs and more sighs

She drinks her water

I see her pain

I say her child’s name

She thanks me

Her voice is monotone

I hold her hand

I see her pain

I know love and grief

Our visit is short

I hug her and she leaves

Her shoulders are stooped

I see her pain

The grieving mom visits again

She speaks of her anger and disbelief

I listen

I see her pain

I know love and grief

She speaks slowly

The sighs begin

She feels lost

She speaks of exhaustion

Her shirt appears ironed

I see her pain

I know love and grief

She shudders

A few tears trickle down her face

We sit in silence

She begins to speak

I see her pain

She speaks of her love for her child

She shares some memories

I say her child’s name

A smile appears

I know love and grief

The visit was longer

She was calmer

I see her pain

I know love and grief
